While public auction sales are declining in the art world, private sales — done behind closed doors between discreet buyers and sellers — are growing. Classic cars are also seeing a shift to private sales, especially with the most expensive and rare models. But its newly formed RM Sotheby's private sales division has seen its sales more than quadruple over the past four years, according to Shelby Myers, global head of private sales for RM Sotheby's. The rise in private sales for classic cars, art, real estate and other markets is being driven by social media, technology and cooling prices for collectibles. "They're leaving money on the table," said real estate broker Noble Black of Douglas Elliman.

The rapid rise and fall of ghost kitchens
  + stars: | 2024-04-14 | by ( Kenneth Niemeyer | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Ghost kitchens are restaurants with no storefront and no seating that customers never see and which only do delivery. Several influencers and celebrities have used ghost kitchens to produce their own lines of food, like YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known online as Mr. AdvertisementAnd as quality issues and late delivery times worsen, some ghost kitchens are starting to see legal challenges. Cracker Barrel also opened its own virtual restaurant using CloudKitchens, another ghost kitchen group, according to Restaurant Business. The company owns three virtual brands, Banda Burrito, The Meltdown, and Burger Den.

US government agencies are already banned from using Kaspersky Lab software but action to prevent private companies from using the software would be unprecedented. It’s the latest US government effort to use its vast regulatory powers to prevent Americans from using popular technology that US officials consider a national security risk. A Kaspersky Lab spokesperson did not respond to questions about a potential prohibition or about how big the company’s market share is in the US. Commerce Department officials have to carefully consider how practical any such regulation would be for the department to enforce and for users to comply with. But the expected move from the Biden administration would go a step further by using Commerce Department authorities to prevent private companies from using Kaspersky Lab software.

Hedge fund billionaire and New York Mets owner Steve Cohen said he owns "very little" bitcoin, though he didn't specify its value. "My son is really into it, and he had me play around and try to figure out how to transact on Coinbase," Cohen told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday. Still, he appears to be following along with investors across the world who have been trying to understand how to value bitcoin and whether it belongs in a portfolio. But the $6,000 in BNPL loans she'd racked up over roughly two years felt frivolous, she said, especially because they're planning to buy their first home. Many are seeking cover from high credit card interest rates. After trimming her discretionary spending and sticking to home-cooked meals, she said she's been able to whittle down her BNPL debt to about $1,200. Klarna said it had responsible spending limits for its users, whose average outstanding balance is $150, compared to the more than $6,000 for credit card users. Baird, for her part, acknowledged BNPL services can make inflation and high interest rates feel "easier" for those who can keep their shopping impulses under control.

Then, as the Federal Reserve began its battle against inflation in 2022, mortgage rates shot up, eventually hitting a 20-year high in October. Over the past decade, there's been a clear correlation between mortgage rates and inventory: When mortgage rates fall, the number of available homes for sale at a given moment shrinks. So, yes, waiting it out until mortgage rates decline sure seems appealing. The Federal Reserve has signaled that it plans to drop borrowing rates this year, which would likely push down mortgage rates. Most of the banks deemed to be potentially challenged are community lenders with less than $10 billion in assets. These banks need to either raise capital, likely from private equity sources as NYCB did, or merge with stronger banks, Graham said. There are other signs of mounting stress among smaller banks. They ranged in size from $90 billion in assets to under $1 billion, according to Fitch. He predicts a surge in merger activity from lenders between $3 billion and $20 billion in assets as smaller firms look to scale up.

The Ethereum network successfully completed its "Dencun" upgrade on Wednesday, which is meant to help it become faster and cheaper to use. The price of ether has been trading lower since then, which was expected based on the cryptocurrency's behavior following previous tech upgrades. "High activity on the Ethereum network has caused high transaction fees and, consequently, more fees burnt," Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant's head of research, said in a note Wednesday. High transaction activity causes network fees to spike, more fees being burnt and total supply to decrease." They're hoping that the combination of increased activity and the decrease in the supply of ether over time will push the token's price higher.

New York CNN —Dealmaking is the lifeblood of Wall Street. But analysts say that funding cuts in the plan could end up harming mergers and acquisitions on Wall Street, squashing hopes of a recovery in dealmaking. The bad news: Recent regulations and proposed budget cuts threaten to step on those green shoots before they’re able to flower. Why it matters: Dealmaking isn’t just good for Wall Street. Shares of the stock are down nearly 30% so far this year after its seemingly nonstop streak of bad luck.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission pushed for bitcoin exchange-traded funds to have a key difference from major stock funds, and that decision's effect on how the funds trade will only become clear over time. The bitcoin funds that launched Thursday are using a share redemption process that turns the underlying crypto into cash. Most ETFs primarily use an in-kind redemption process, where the underlying asset does not have to be actually sold. There is some concern that using the cash-only redemption model could make the plumbing of the ETFs less efficient. Using cash-only redemption could result in ETFs that have weaker liquidity and wider bid-ask spreads, Grayscale argued.

Vlad Tenev, co-founder and CEO of Robinhood, rings the opening bell at the Nasdaq on July 29, 2021. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev says he doesn't believe that the payment for order flow (PFOF) model of market-maker routing that the company incorporates in the U.S. is under threat. Speaking with CNBC, Tenev defended the practice of PFOF, saying that it's "inherently here to stay." PFOF is the practice of routing trades through market-makers like Citadel Securities in return for a slice of the profits. Critics say that brokers have an incentive to direct order flow to market makers offering PFOF arrangements over the interests of their clients.

TikTok has officially launched its e-commerce service TikTok Shop in the US. The platform introduced TikTok Shop in the U.S. in September as an in-app shopping experience, capitalizing on the #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt trend. Though TikTok Shop previously faced backlash and was forced to shut down in Indonesia, consumers are increasingly trending toward buying off of social media. And 86% of Gen Z shoppers say social media influences their shopping habits, according to an ICSC report. The bitcoin white paper was published 15 years ago by Satoshi Nakamoto. The paper outlined the blockchain technology that would underpin a decentralized payment system. The paper has made its mark, but intriguingly, nobody today has figured out who Satoshi Nakamoto is. What's in the white paperWhile bitcoin was officially launched in January 2009, in the 2008 paper Satoshi Nakamoto laid out the fundamental framework of the blockchain-based payment system. It wasn't written in the white paper, but the system is designed so that there are only 21 million bitcoins that will ever exist.

Prosecutors in the criminal trial against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried compared one of the defense's arguments to a scene in the 1994 film "Dumb and Dumber," in which actor Jim Carrey says IOUs are "as good as money." Funds also allegedly went to paying for things such as a $35 million property in the Bahamas and political donations. Customers were ultimately unable to retrieve much of their money as FTX and Alameda were simultaneously imploding. In a footnote, the prosecution writes, "A popular movie from the 1990s illustrates the point: a briefcase, once filled with money, is not the same as a briefcase later filled with IOUs." To be sure, the financial statements that the banks will start to release on Friday will be backward-looking. Interest income will reflect the sharp and continued rise of central bank rates, which drag up the price banks must pay for customer deposits and what they charge for loans. NEW YORK (AP) — A judge ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House. Engoron’s ruling, in a phase of the case known as summary judgment, resolves the key claim in James’ lawsuit, but several others remain. “Today, a judge ruled in our favor and found that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization engaged in years of financial fraud," James said in a statement. Sept 26 (Reuters) - Shares of Immunovant (IMVT.O) surged nearly 80% on Tuesday, after early-stage data from its experimental antibody treatment exceeded analysts' expectations. Immunovant is developing its antibody drug, IMVT-1402, as an under-the-skin injection to potentially treat autoimmune diseases. Immunovant's experimental drug reduced the levels of IgG, or immunoglobulin antibodies, that cause inflammation and disease in healthy adults. Shares of Roivant Sciences (ROIV.O), Immunovant's largest shareholder with a 56.5% stake, according to LSEG data, also rose 17.5% to $12. The positive data from IMVT-1402 could give Roivant another "potentially blockbuster" candidate to transact, after its experimental treatment for bowel disease, Jefferies analyst Dennis Ding said.
